Bay St. Louis Bridge restored

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

It took 626 days, but now the bridge connecting Bay St. Louis to the rest of the world has been restored.

Bay St. Louis is in Mississippi, about three quarters of the way between New Oreans and Biloxi. The 30 foot storm surge from Katrina (this part of the Gulf took a direct hit from the storm) wiped out the bridge and about half the homes in the town.

The town’s mayor, Eddie Favre, still lives in a trailer and conducts city business our of a former utility company building outside of town. He’s pledged to wear shorts, a Hawaiian shirt, and sneakers until his town is back on its feet.

Bay St. Louis was a popular seaside resort for New Orleanians.

Greenola New Orleans Holy Cross Brad Pitt

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

Greenola - cheesy name, inspired idea and one of the main New Orleans initiatives of Brad Pitt who moved to the city earlier this year in a much-admired act of solidarity with the city.

What is Greenola?

Ecological, sustainable, low cost, innovative architectural design for rebuilding the housing of the Gulf Coast.

There was a competition for best design and Pitt served as the jury chair and patron giving the program massive media, and therefore, political clout. Ground broke last week in the Holy Cross neighborhood.

The winner: Workshop/APD.

The winning submission: a plannned community made up of five single-family homes, an 18-unit apartment building, a daycare facility and a community center built on 50 acres (half a hectare or 5,000 square meters.)

Here are the contest submissions…

New Orleans street music

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

I don’t know who made it (the filmmaker doesn’t take credit), but here’s an excellent four minute video featuring New Orleans street music.

If this is what’s on the street, just imagine what’s in the clubs. New Orleans…an embarrassment of riches.

Thank you “Yahoo for Good”

Monday, May 14th, 2007

In the beginning, it was just an idea on a kitchen table…

Make some short videos about Levees.org and put them on the web.

One thing led to another and along came film and TV star John Goodman…then a YouTube campaign which boosted the video to the Top 10 in the News and Blog category for the day…then Yahoo invited Levees.org to post the video to its web site which they did…and then Yahoo put it on their home page.

Their home page! One of the most valuable pieces of Internet real estate in the world. In the short time it was up, over 40,000 people dowloaded it in just a few hours.

The Yahoo person represented herself as being from “Yahoo for Good.”

Hmmm…

Here’s the page. Click here to enjoy.
