Lafcadio Hearn said…

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

“It’s not an easy thing to describe one’s first impression of New Orleans: for while it actually resembles no other city upon the face of the earth, yet it recalls vague memories of a hundred cities. It owns suggestions of towns in Italy, and in Spain, cities in England and in Germany, of seaports in the Mediterranean, and of seaports in the tropics.”- 1877 essay “At the Gate of the Tropics,” Lafcadio Hearn.

Cell phone movies from New Orleans

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I should know better than going anywhere without my PureDigital video camera (about the size of a pack of cigarettes.)But I do have a rudimentary video camera on my cell phone that records up to 15 seconds.

Here’s the end of a drum solo by a young kid playing with the Treme Brass Band at Ray’s Boom Boom Room on Frenchman Street.

Here’s some clips from the 2007 Big Nine Social and Pleasure Club Second Line, my favorite parade of the year and maybe my favorite event in New Orleans period. (more…)

AP reports on Army Corps improprieties

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

It’s a game of inches and levees.org has again helped move the ball down the field.

Several months ago, levees.org posted a video to YouTube pointing out an odd relationship between the Army Corps of Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The ASCE threatened to sue levees.org - a massive tactical blunder which put the issue of the front page of the Times Picayune.

Now the Associated Press is starting to report on the same issue.

NoLA Rising video

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

The artist in this video has been charged by the City of N.O. with 1,100 counts of littering and now faces $50,000 in fines.

An exhibit and art show is set up to help raise funds at the Avenue Pub at 1732 St. Charles Avenue. The show is up until March 29th and is open Monday through Thursday ten to six.

If you’re out of town and want to help, here’s an idea:

NoLA Rising Legal Defense Fund

As y’all know from the recent City Business article, I am facing some possibly stringent fines and the like. My legal representation, Buddy Spell has determined that because of the costs, it may be in my best interest and in the interest of NoLA Rising that we set up a legal defense fund. If you’d like to assist in these matters, it would be greatly appreciated and you can do so by sending a check made out to

If so, you have my deepest sympathies.

The weather was perfect, the crowd cheerful and the parade magnificent. Some short clips that don’t even begin to do the day justice. (more…)

More…on legal observation campaign

Good afternoon all,

Just wondering if anyone wanted to volunteer for the ACLU’s legal observing effort for the Uptown Mardi Gras Indian Super Sunday this Sunday the 16th. Although no longer working for the ACLU, I’m volunteering to help coordinate the effort on Sunday.

If you can, please let me know and send me your name, cellphone number, and availability.

Volunteers will meet at 12:30pm on the corner of Washington and LaSalle on the park side of the street for a brief training. Super Sunday lasts generally till 6:30pm or so. We’d love it if you could stay all day but folks that can help even just for a few hours are welcome.

Thanks in advance for any help. Forward this to anyone who might be interested….

Why the Indians need defending. The over-the-top campaign of police harassment and brutality took place just three short years ago.

St. Patrick’s Day New Orleans 2008

Friday, March 14th, 2008

It’s that time of year again.

Last year, I missed it because I got caught in a white-out blizzard in upstate New York. Not only didn’t planes fly, I couldn’t even get my car down the street the snow was falling so thick. (more…)
